Bhagavad Gita 8.3

Chapter 8 · The Imperishable Absolute

The Blessed Lord said — Brahman is the Imperishable, the Supreme; Its essential nature is called Self-knowledge; the offering (to the gods) which causes existence and manifestation of beings and which also sustains them is called action.

Context

Krishna answers concisely: Brahman is the imperishable Supreme; one's essential nature is called the Self; the creative force that brings beings into existence is called karma. These definitions provide the philosophical foundation for understanding reality at its deepest level.
