Bhagavad Gita 2.58

Chapter 2 · The Yoga of Knowledge

When, like the tortoise which withdraws on all sides its limbs, he withdraws his senses from the sense-objects, then his wisdom becomes steady.

Context

Like a tortoise withdrawing its limbs into its shell, one who can withdraw the senses from sense objects has steady wisdom. The tortoise image is perfect: not destroying the limbs, just pulling them in when needed. We can engage the world, but must be able to disengage at will.
